As the tale goes, Ron Piet was once the faithful parrot of a notorious pirate – to duo were considered the ‘Horror of the Seas’. On one fateful journey, their ship was tragically attacked by other pirates with all crew and cargo destined for the bottom of the ocean. Several days later when the storm had calmed and danger had passed, Ron Piet was lucky and found clinging to the last rum barrel drifting eastwood, too weak to fly… the barrel was engraved ‘Ron 10 Anos Panama’. After a long and exhausting journey, Ron Piet washed ashore the Elbe beach, Hamburg, where a local bar owner found Ron Piet and discovered the most delicious rum…

So how is Ron Piet manufactured? At the sugar cane plantation in San Miguelito, Southern Panama, harvested sugar cane is crushed and pressed to make a juice, which is boiled to syrup to form dark, treacly molasses. The molasses’s are fermented for around 2 days with yeast ready for the mash to be distilled. The distillate is then poured into barrels and tropically-matured in Panama for 10 years in exquisite ex-bourbon oak barrels. After this development phase the rum embarks on its long and stormy journey to Hamburg for quality inspection and final bottling. XO is a special designation for ‘extra old’.

Such a strict production process with fierce attention to detail, the finest sugar cane and ten year tropical-ageing in oak give this rum an incomparable aromatic, yet gentle flavour, fruity with soft-buttery caramel notes. Tropical fruit with subtle vanilla, bright orange, coconut, deep brown sugar and oak wood-spice. A nuance of woody notes, pepper and slight spiciness. Distinctively soft and smooth.
