Move over whisky, Move over Irn Bru… Scottish rum is on the rise! 

You may have thought rum was only produced in the tropical climate of the Caribbean, South America or the spice islands of Indonesia – not the overcast climate of Scotland. But infact Scotland has a long and rich history of rum production dating back to the 17th century and the sugar boom which led to Glasgows ‘golden age’ of sugar.

There are now a growing number of dedicated rum distilleries in Scotland producing rum inspired by local ingredients and botanicals – the driving force behind the ‘new age of Scottish rum’ whilst harnessing the rich whisky distillation history of Scotland. 

Lets take a look at a few Scottish Rums…

JACOBITE THE 45 SPICED RUM (Glasgow) – Embodying the spirit of rebellion

A bold 45% spiced rum championing sustainably sourced Scottish botanicals. A highly unique flavour with ginger, orange peel, vanilla, liquorice notes, oak-smoked Scottish seaweed and subtle wood spice. A sweet-salty balance akin to salted caramel. A Scottish rum for the brave, the pioneering, the adventurous. 

RON CABEZON BOTANICAL RUM (Aberdeen) – Wilfully uncompromising

A golden 5 year old rum is split into two batches; one batch to macerate, one batch to infuse with botanicals. The batches are then rekindled and blended with pure Royal Deeside Spring water. Smooth and clean with tropical fruits, smooth vanilla, Aberdeenshire honey, Arabian Cubeb (think all spice and black pepper), West African Kola nut and a light smoky spiciness.

BRASS NECK SPICED RUM (Glasgow) – Bold as brass

Breakaway from the ordinary with this Scottish botanical spiced rum. A bold flavour like no other featuring unique botanicals of tonka bean, milk thistle, nettles and orange peel. Featuring the Brass Neck Fox – symbolic of the freedom to roam wherever you choose, journeying from natural habitat to urban environment.

TEMPLE SPIRITS SPICED RUM (Aberdeen) – Scottish rum with charisma

A dark spiced botanical with sweet maple, vanilla, Scottish raspberry and spice. “Meet me where the sky touches the land in Alba, we always come home to the Temple”.

OLD MOTHER HUNT No 7 SPICED RUM (Glasgow) – Fresh, honest and authentic rum made from scratch in Scotland

A full-bodied, yet well-balanced, spiced rum with warm ginger, citrus, deep raisin, cinnamon, sweet caramel and subtle clove. Born in lockdown, enjoyed in freedom. 

RUMBURRA ORACH (Fife) – Caribbean exoticism, Scottish spirit

Carefully selected 3 & 5 year old Bajan rums, tropically aged in American oak barrels, are blended with pure Scottish water. A golden rum with a whisky note appealing to both the rum purist and malt Whisky connoisseur. Earthy leather, tobacco, tropical fruits and sweet honey with oak wood spice and a bite of pepper.

ISLAND SLICE DARK (Dumbarton) – Share a slice of the Caribbean

A dark rum with genuine afro-Caribbean soul, double distilled and then aged in ex-Speyside Whisky barrels on the River Clyde. Rich fruit, deep treacle, toasted brown sugar, tropical fruits, banana and oak wood notes with a light smokiness. Rich and dark, this rum will appeal to the discerning Whisky drinker. 

SEA SHANTY RUM (Aberdeen) – A celebration of seafaring legends and their sea shanties

A spiced sugar-tea rum which pays homage to the ‘Wellerman’ sea shanty which refers to ‘sugar, tea and rum’. Sweet toasted brown sugar with natural botanicals, warmth from clove and cinnamon and its signature handpicked Lady Grey tea.

TWICE BURIED BOTANICAL SPICED RUM (Aberdeen) - Lived once, twice buried

Newest to the Scene, launching October 2021, Twice Buried is a small batch, botanical spiced rum. A carefully selected blend of the finest Caribbean rums from Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Guyana are infused with local Scottish Strawberries alongside exotic spices, salted caramel, nutmeg and sweet honey.
