Black Pound day (#blackpoundday) falls on the first Saturday of each month, with customers encouraged to shop black-owned businesses. In this blog we wanted to shine a light on the first truly black-owned UK rum brand – Flat Cap Rum.
“Authentic Caribbean heritage”
The brand pays homage to their late Jamaican father, Billy Balton McKitty, infamous for wearing his Flat Cap; used as the chief inspiration for their logo. The family’s roots stem from Burnt Savannah Westmoreland Jamaica, where 5 brothers and 5 sisters were raised under one roof. Rum was a spirit close to the family’s heart, and they now pride themselves on quality and taste.
Flat Cap Vanilla & Cherry rum features a premium Caribbean white rum base from the West Indies, traditionally distilled in hand beaten copper stills, infused with an explosion of sweet cherry and smooth vanilla. Characterful, sweet and fruity.

Flat Cap Vanilla & Cherry Rum pairs beautifully with a premium cola to make a boozy Cherry Coke, and the vanilla adds a luscious smooth note. Or perhaps, pair with some ginger ale or ginger beer for an intriguing flavour! Feeling inventive? Try a ‘Heavy Cherry’ by mixing 50ml Flat Cap Vanilla & Cherry Rum, 30ml Cherry vodka, 15l Grenadine and top up with cherry juice. Sweet heaven!
Flat Cap Mixed Spice is a new interpretation of the traditional spiced rum. The base West Indian rum sits on a combination of orange, clove, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg spices – all natural flavours. Pair with your favourite mixer such as ginger ale, ginger beer or cola.

Alternatively use Flat Cap Mixed Spice as the main attraction in ‘McKitty Rum Punch. Prepare a jug of Rum Punch using 150ml Flat Cap Mixed Spice Rum, 175ml orange juice, 75ml lime juice, 50ml sugar syrup, a slug of Grenadine, a slug of Angostura Bitters and some grated nutmeg. Serve in over ice and garnish with lime wedges and maraschino cherries.
